Auf den ersten Blick scheint bei diesem Vietnam Zippo
etwas nicht zu stimmen: Weshalb sollte die U.S. Patrouillenboote (PBR..
Patrol Boat, River) in Vietnam einsetzen, wenn es zu diesem Zweck die "Brown
Water Navy" gab? Die Erklärung ist eigentlich ganz einfach: Die 458th Transportation Company war die einzige Einheit der U.S. Army, welche mit PBRs ausgerüstet war:
Wenn man nun ein wenig nach "Bob Felde Vietnam" googelt, wird man schnell fündig und erkennt schnell den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Vorbesitzer, den PBRs und der 458th Trans Co (PBR) ;-)

My good friend Sgt. Rick Thorpe was the owner of both lighters. He saved my ass in an unofficial operation in a neighbor country of Vietnam after I crash landed in a civilian supply plane. I don't know if he was listed as KIA since the operation was one of those which never existed. He may have not been assigned to the 198th in 1972 since he was doing special operations. For all I know he could have been listed as deserter to keep the military roster "neat and tidy". The twin lighter was forwarded to me after Rick failed to make it back. We had a bet, he lost and I won ? This was all too long ago and these things I am happy to forget after these years. Too much suffering for all concerned back in those days... Robert P

196th Infantry Brigade 1967
Die 196. Infanterie Brigade wurde in Fort Devens aufgestellt und war vorgesehen für einen Einsatz Mitte 1966 in der Dominikanischen Republik. Anstelle dieses Einsatz wurde die Brigade jedoch nach Vietnam verlegt. Dort dauerte ihr Einsatz vom 26. August 1966 bis zum 29. Juni 1972. Damit war sie 1972 die letzte amerikanische Kampfbrigade, die Vietnam verlassen hat. |
